Next Steps
A programme by Bureau Ritter to support dance professionals in Hesse. Supported by the Crespo Foundation.
Funded by the Crespo Foundation, Next Steps has been supporting the professional dance scene in Hesse since 2024. In line with the foundation’s guiding principle, “empowering people,” the programme creates space for artists at every stage of their careers to shape their own development – whether by deepening artistic approaches or sharpening professional skills. The initiative also addresses graduates of state-recognized dance training institutions as well as cultural organizations. It supports both individual projects and initiatives with structural impact that generate sustainable momentum for improved production conditions.
Emerging artists, for example, can apply for research grants or funding for a first stage production. More established practitioners can seek support not only for advancing their artistic work, but also for touring their repertoire or collaborating with other artists. From the outset, Next Steps has placed a strong emphasis on networking, agency, and the empowerment of its participants.
With a total budget of 1.128 million euros for the period 2024–2026, the programme has already made a significant contribution to strengthening the dance community in Hesse during its pilot phase: a total of 18 projects were recommended for funding by an independent jury in the first two calls.
In March 2026, the Crespo Foundation’s board of trustees approved the continuation of Next Steps, committing 3.84 million euros to the programme for the years 2027 to 2030. Four additional calls for proposals are planned during this period.
Support, training, and networking
From the outset, Next Steps has combined project funding with professional development, individual mentoring, and targeted networking, complementing existing public funding instruments with a development-oriented approach. Even during the application process, the Next Steps team at Bureau Ritter provides comprehensive guidance in various formats, working closely with artists to develop tailored, needs-based concepts.
Selected projects are invited to take part in a range of accompanying measures: the annual gathering of all funded projects at Crespo Haus, a monthly online meet-up for exchange and networking, and targeted training formats. These are based on the specific needs of the participants and are delivered either by external experts or by the Bureau Ritter team.
In the next funding phase, these exchange and training opportunities will be further expanded. From 2027 onwards, they will be complemented by a new format, “Next Steps TanzLokal.” This one-day event will take place annually in different cities across Hesse and offer funded artists a public platform to present insights into their projects, while fostering dialogue between dance practitioners, cultural policymakers, and audiences.
Next Steps PLUS
A key future component of the programme is the structured support of Next Steps alumni. Former recipients will continue to have access to all program formats and can actively contribute their experience. In this way, they remain connected to current developments and in exchange with artists from other cities. Their ongoing involvement ensures that knowledge and experience from completed projects are shared, strengthens collaboration across regional scenes, and helps consolidate and expand structures for future partnerships.
