TANZPAKT RECONNECT supported 55 projects with 5,5 million euros.
159 applications from artists and organisations in 13 German federal states were submitted to the jury, requesting funding of around 18.7 million euros in total. On 26th and 27th October 2020, the jury selected 51 projects for funding, awarding them grants amounting to a total of 5.5 million euros.

“Reconnect Participative Dance”
Reconnect Participative Dance seeks to map, evaluate and, if appropriate, further develop the digital, analogue and hybrid participatory formats that have emerged in the German contemporary dance scene during the coronavirus pandemic. Formats that were useful and worked well will be preserved and promoted, while others will be improved or refined. Four working groups will focus on four specific topics: ‘dance and age’, ‘mixed-abled dance’, ‘dance in schools’ and ‘international contexts’. The results will be made available on an online platform.

“Sustainability of work, developing new formats, archiving and dissemination of knowledge”
The choreographer Eszter Salamon will use her TANZPAKT RECONNECT funding to structure her work and expand her artistic practice. Practically, this will be made possible by the hiring of a manager and dramaturg to assist in her work, as well as a new office and rehearsal space in Berlin. Reflecting on previous artistic projects from her 20-year career requires an expanded archival practice. In addition, Eszter Salamon will develop new formats and collaborations, focusing increasingly on the medium of film.

“Cranky Bodies Testing Ground”
The intergenerational ensemble Cranky Bodies seeks to explore what a permanent and independent organisational structure might look like in the contemporary dance sector, and how such a structure could serve as a model for other national and international dance scenes. This will involve creating new positions in production management and press/PR in order to attract bookings and partners, maintain and develop the repertoire, and document and evaluate the work. Cranky Bodies are also planning a residency and two-week R&D period for five dancers, enabling them to develop their work and delve deep into artistic practices and techniques.

“tanz.nord – artists network Hamburg-Schleswig Holstein”
Created as a cooperation between four dance institutions in Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein, tanz.nord is the first formal structure enabling dance artists from both states to collaborate. With approx. 40 events organised around five modules, dance professionals will have the opportunity to network and develop new working relationships, thus strengthening the dance scenes in both regions. tanz.nord is a sustainable dance network that aims to unlock new venues for dance and attract local audiences far from the big cities.

“Reizend – an open studio in Schwelm”
The open studio Reizend (which means both ‘charming’ and ‘irritating’) will serve as the artist duo deufer&plischke’s choreographic production space in Schwelm. co-exisTANZ aims to boost the independent dance scene in Heidelberg. Its long-term plan is to establish an artist-led, professional rehearsal space in the city, with its own artistic programme and budget. Currently, the scene is using a studio rented by INTER-ACTIONS in 2019 as part of an interim use agreement. Funding from Tanzpakt RECONNECT will be used to professionalise the studio and turn it into a hub offering rehearsal space, creative learning activities, professional development and networking opportunities for the independent scene in Heidelberg and the Rhein-Neckar metropolitan area.

Emanuele Soavi incompany is expanding its production, communications and creative learning departments in order to create a framework for working with major music institutions, orchestras and composers of electronic music. It is developing artistic projects and creative learning initiatives with the Cologne Opera and Philharmonic, the Duisburg Philharmonic and, in the long-term, the Network of European Philharmonics . Working with TanzFaktur Cologne, it will set out a strategy for creating an experimental repertoire and ensuring that projects are produced sustainably.

“Space for exploration”
Supported by TANZPAKT RECONNECT, Enrico Ticconi and Ginevra Panzetti will work more intensively with their current team (made up of a production manager, tour manager, sound designer and dramaturg), independently of specific projects. By doing so, they aim to implement sustainable strategies for distributing their work on stage and in the digital realm. They will also rent a rehearsal space in Berlin to undertake creative research projects, transforming it into a space for experimental encounters and artistic conversations, both in a local context and for a broader audience.

“Developing a sustainable structure”
The RECONNECT funding will be used to establish a flexible and sustainable company structure, both on an artistic and a production management level. The goal is for the artist to be able to draw on a network of collaborators from different disciplines to create bespoke artistic teams depending on the needs of each individual project. In addition, REACH OUT labs will offer opportunities for other artists to come together and share experiences. “TANZPAKT Reconnect Trans*z-Forms Brandenburg”
DiR – Dance in Residence Brandenburg is the first networking initiative by two of the most important contemporary dance institutions in Brandenburg. It aims to establish and develop new sustainable partnerships with visual arts institutions, community centres and creative practitioners. As well as securing new production spaces and venues for dance artists in Potsdam and Cottbus, it will also set up new residencies for German and international artists, focusing on regions and communities that have so far had little contact with the international dance scene.

“THINK BIG! Reach out”
The upcoming THINK BIG! festival, due to take place in Munich in July 2021, will expand its programme both temporally and spatially in order to be able to react flexibly to the restrictions imposed by the coronavirus pandemic. As well as performances on stage, there will be performative and participatory projects in public spaces. As part of a research phase in the run-up to the festival, the Fokus Tanz team will also work with experts to develop new content and strategic approaches.

With the support of TANZPAKT RECEONNECT, the FREUNDESKREIS HELLERAU e.V. will fund the construction of a partially covered, flexible and multifunctional outdoor venue that can be used from spring to autumn. Consisting of a canvas tent roof and mobile panels for the stage floor, the space will also feature weatherproof seating and bar furniture. The challenges of the coronavirus pandemic have made it impossible for the company to offer ‘normal’ training and classes. Many of its members are at higher risk from the virus and have been required to shield and avoid social mixing. The RECONNECT funding will enable the company to implement rigorous hygiene and safety measures so that training can resume for as many of its dancers as possible. In addition, digital workshops will enable those still shielding to participate in classes and artistic activities.

Hennermanns Horde aims to continue offering accessible dance classes for all age groups – from toddlers to school leavers – in rural and urban areas. “NEW FEARS – Gallery for dance and transdisciplinary art”
The Berlin-based dancer and choreographer wants to create long-term, flexible and transdisciplinary opportunities for young artists working at the intersection of dance and the visual arts. “Tanzerei – strengthening disability dance in Berlin”
Tanzerei aims to promote the integration of artists with learning difficulties in Berlin’s contemporary dance scene. Funding from TANZPAKT RECONNECT will help to make the project more permanent. New dance formats and hybrid forms of public performance will be developed, involving artists and audiences with and without disabilities and using unconventional spaces as well as traditional theatre buildings. One of the outcomes of the project will be a performance in a museum context.

The tanzhaus nrw supports urban dance in North Rhine-Westphalia, enabling dancers to work professionally. It will create the Urban Dance Lab, a multidisciplinary space for training, residencies and masterclasses. The project signals the beginning of a push to strengthen and sustain the dance scene of Northern Bavaria. “Crisis as Opportunity – Unit II”
Dresden-based THE GUTS COMPANY will explore new forms of artistic collaboration and presentation, asking how audiences can continue to experience dance during the pandemic. By developing the performance format “UNIT II”, it is creating a space that is unaffected by visitor regulations, red list countries, travel restrictions or caps on audience capacity: One by one, spectators enter a mobile box where they are filmed by a 3D camera. They then watch a visual interpretation of their own movements on screen.

The choreographer Thomas Lehmen has been actively improving working conditions for artists in Oberhausen since 2017. In addition, three independent choreographers will be offered grants to create three new productions.

The project aims to establish lasting structures that will provide financial security for the participating artists. It will also build an organisational structure that allows for projects to be planned centrally and then rolled out internationally. The focus is on dance productions that explore the colonial history of specific places, making it visible through artistic means. In addition, the choreographer will develop a format for presenting her work at conferences and symposia.

“TanzIMPULSE Leipzig”
4fürTANZ will secure and perpetuate the structures created for the Leipzig dance scene since 2017. The funding will be used to create two new positions, both to ensure that existing projects can be continued on a long-term basis and that artists working on their own productions can receive advice and support. A new office space will serve as an administrative hub, while a dance studio will provide space for classes, workshops, rehearsals, residencies and informal sharing formats. Local artists will thus become part of an interdisciplinary network and Leipzig’s status as a nationally important place of production will be affirmed.
